Crafts on Peel announces IMAGINE THE ‘IM’POSSIBILITIES: BAMBOO, an exhibition at London Craft Week 2021 showcasing traditional and contemporary bamboo craft from Hong Kong taking place at Soho Works 180 Strand from October 4 to 10, 2021. This program is co-sponsored by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London.
Ranging from the established to the emerging, traditional craftsmen and contemporary artisans from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan have come together to share their journey in reinventing the craft of bamboo.
Bamboo is accessible and it inspires respect. Its hollow stem, nodes, firm roots and upright stance embody the spirit of upward mobility, the values of purity and moral integrity in Chinese culture. Bamboo has not only been utilized in practical ways: an elaborate living culture has developed around it. This cultural phenomenon around bamboo has transcended countries and cultures, giving the participating artisans a shared thread of traditional heritage.
Bamboo crafts represent Hong Kong traditional culture and the ancestral wisdom inherited from generation to generation. The participating artisans have imagined the impossibilities of weaving utility and contemporary aesthetics into traditional bamboo craftsmanship.
