Born in Guangzhou in 1946, Master Wong moved to Hong Kong and started learning the art of Lingnan penjing in 1964. In 1988, he turned his attention to specialized theoretical research and the artistic interpretation of Lingnan penjing. He has received numerous awards and participated in workshops to showcase his skills around the globe, fostering cultural and artistic exchanges. More notably in 2008, he was invited to the 8th Crespi Bonsai Cup International Bonsai & Stone Exhibition in Italy to conduct a demonstration on making Lingnan Penjing. In October 2023, Master Wong was invited by Hong Kong Fringe Club to show his first solo exhibition with the themes of “Legacy”, “Continuity” and “Eternity”.

To promote the art of Lingnan penjing, Master Wong has taught a variety of courses on the fundamentals of horticulture and Lingnan penjing for more than two decades. In 2002, with some of his more devoted students, they collaboratively established a creative and educational venue to further nurture and cultivate new generations of Lingnan penjing artisans. Later in 2007, he founded the Institute of Lingnan Penjing Hong Kong and served as its president and now consultant and technical advisor for the association. He has initiated annual Lingnan penjing exhibitions and artisans exchange programmes, and contributed significantly to the Lingnan penjing’s craft scene in Hong Kong.
