Contemporary artisan Kanok Wan has a passion for collecting vintage objects and tracing the stories of Hong Kong behind them. Through the process of restoration, he hopes to bring the stories of yesterday’s life and design details into the contemporary world, perpetuating the history and collective memories of our city.
Recalled by him, it was a common practice for families to place a piece of furniture named “Port Wine Cabinet” at home. It is a wooden cabinet made of solid wood and plywood with nails and joineries to contain valuable collectibles of the family, such as wine and utensils. During his research and creation, he got his inspirations from old objects, pictures and movies. He was captivated by the design of a special piece consisting of a solid wooden frame and an interchangeable sliding glass door. In the work, he fits shorter wooden handles on the glass sliding doors to create a sense of suspension and space.
He hopes that the functional and elegant style of “When & While” can serve as a cultural carrier, showing the warmth and joy of families decades ago in juxtaposition to the hustle and bustle of modern days. The work expresses the untold yet heart-warming tales back in the good old days.
