While the neon signboards are becoming few and far between in the streets of Hong Kong, several heritage preservation organizations have taken the initiative to salvage these neon signs before they are being demolished or replaced.
Brian Kwok has collected the rooster sign board from Kai Kee Mahjong Parlour but the neon glass tubes were destroyed. The sign is passed to neon craftsman Master Wu Chi Kai for restoration. Master Wu took reference from old photos of the neon sign and sketched the rooster’s outline according to the shape of the signboard. These outlines were then used for neon tube production. Additionally, he repainted the lost color on the signboard and rebuilt the rusted and lost chicken feet area with his illustration. Through the detailed observation and masterful craftsmanship, the rooster sign can now be lit up once again.
