Animal Chess

Fanson Lam, KC, PAK

About the Artwork

Animal Chess is a symphony of form and function, meticulously crafted to become an heirloom of enduring beauty and artistry.

Central to this piece is the duality of existence—the baby and parent animals that grace the board game. Each figure is not merely a representation but a symbol of nurture, guidance and the sacred bond that defines parenthood. The chess pieces invite contemplation on the roles of caregivers and children, encapsulating the essence of heritage intertwined with the beauty of generations passing.

The shared commitment to achieving excellence is also reflected in the selection of materials. The transition from paper to metal form signifies not only a shift in medium but an elevation of crafts significance. The work is adorned with intricately crafted aluminium accessories and bronze chess, each element thoughtfully designed to enhance the visual narrative.

Story of Traditional Crafts

| Story of Animal Chess |

Crafted with impeccable precision and artistry, Animal Chess presents itself as more than a classic board game as it seamlessly blends aesthetics and functionality. At its inception, it was a humble paper board game, rich in cultural significance and steeped in the simple joys of childhood. The creative journey began with a reverence for this traditional board game, yet it soon blossomed into a vision of transformation. Through meticulous artistry, this classic game is reimagined into a stunning stacked design and a sculptural work of art, a testament to the evolution of form and function.

This board game, reminiscent of a jungle landscape, is replete with caves and rivers, subtly reflecting the hierarchical order of the animal kingdom. The captivating element of Animal Chess lies in the unexpected: the mouse, seemingly insignificant and occupying the lowest rank of the animal kingdom, possesses the power to "capture" the elephant, the undisputed king of the jungle.

Its origins, while shrouded in a certain mystery, are widely believed to lie within the rich tapestry of Chinese culture, with subtle variations in rules adding layers of strategic depth to this simple pastime. In Hong Kong, Animal Chess holds a particularly cherished place, resonating deeply within the collective memory of generations. It is a fascinating strategy game enjoyed by people of all ages and walks of life, a captivating centerpiece bringing individuals together in shared moments of playful competition and connection.

Making Process

KC & PAK’s creation of the board game involves digital fabrication and the traditional craft techniques of metalworking. The two streams of rivers on the board are created with aluminum plates paired with raising and sinking, a ubiquitous metalworking technique, to achieve the desired geometry and contours that mimic the planishing effects.

On the other hand, Fanson created chess using sculpting and lost wax casting, a technique in which wax serves as the intermediary that transforms the artisan's vision into tangible reality. He immersed himself in the rich tapestry of Japanese metal crafts during the craft exchange journey, witnessing firsthand the intricate techniques and the profound connection between craftsmanship and innovation. This piece of work celebrates exceptional craftsmanship and encourages mindful appreciation of the artisans’ dedication to enriching the contemporary cultural landscape.
