About the Artwork
“The Legacy of Time” metaphorically represents the master's hand as the trunk of a tree, taking the form of a family tree. The tree branch held by Master Liu represents the casting spout which aids in the transfer of molten metal within the casting process. The branches are connected to different "fruits", including the tools used in the sculpting process and the sculptures created by the master and his apprentice, embodying the experiences, memories and unique expertise he has accumulated over six decades of casting. The work also symbolizes Master Liu's dedication to passing on his craft and skills to his apprentice, Fanson Lam. Under Master Liu's tireless guidance for over a decade, Fanson Lam has thrived and flourished, akin to the seedling nurtured in the artwork under Master Liu's attentive care.
Story of the Family Tree
The tree, a potent symbol in artistic expression, carries a wealth of meaning. It embodies vitality, growth, and the cycle of life. From a tiny seed sprouting to a sapling taking root and flourishing, it mirrors the journey of individual development, familial lineage, and societal evolution. Moreover, the tree represents stability and resilience, standing firm even against the fiercest storms. Its unwavering nature reflects the indomitable spirit of individuals facing adversity. The image of the tree also signifies a connection to nature, often used in art to convey emotions, thoughts, and cultural values, symbolizing hope and the cyclical nature of life.
A family tree, also known as a genealogy or pedigree chart, is a diagram depicting the relationships between members of a family. It showcases the bloodline of a lineage, typically starting with a common ancestor and branching downwards to depict descendants. Through its hierarchical and branching structure, the family tree visually captures the intricate network of relationships within a family. It presents a clear and ordered lineage, serving as a vital tool for preserving family history.
While Master Liu and Fanson Lam share no blood ties, the family tree depicted in this artwork symbolizes the inheritance of craftsmanship. Furthermore, in traditional Chinese culture, the saying "A day as a teacher, a lifetime as a father." embodies the unique bond and responsibility of the master-and-apprentice relationship, emphasizing the profound affection and enduring commitment between them.
