Interweaving contemporary design with traditional craftsmanship, for its inaugural exhibition, Crafts on Peel invited six ardent contemporary artisans to pair with local traditional craftsmen, and through the collaboration between the two generations, to explore how traditional crafts can be revived, reinterpreted and perpetuated in the contemporary artistic context.
Six contemporary artisans, Jinno Neko, Dylan Kwok, Lawrence Ting, Anthony So, Singchin Lo and Joey Leung, teamed with traditional craftsmen in bamboo framework crafting and papier-marché (Cheung Foon), birdcage crafting (Chan Lok Choi), copper ware crafting (Luk Shu-choi and Luk Keung-choi) and Canton porcelain painting (Joseph Tso), to present a collaborative series of unique handmade artefacts that highlight the traditional element of the craft while injecting contemporary practicality. In conjunction with the collaborations, featured works by Canton porcelain painter Lam Duen Shan Ming and fashion designer Polly Ho will be presented.
Our inaugural exhibition unfolds the transformation of the respective traditional craftsmanship with the change of times, allowing the viewers to revisit and appreciate their values through a contemporary perspective.
